Gospel Reflection for September 2, 2012, 22nd Sunday in Ordinary Time

Jesus called the crowd to him and said, “Listen to me, all of you, and understand.  Nothing that enters into a person from outside can make a person impure; it is the things that come out that defile.”

John 7.14-15

Jesus is breaking down the wall of the law that protects Jewish identity.  Jesus declares all food clean and confronts the Pharisees with forsaking God’s law for human law.  He accuses them of hiding from God’s will under the guise of seeking holiness.  The laws they observe don’t lead to praise and glory of God and justice and peace toward neighbor.  The Pharisees don’t see at work in Jesus the same God who gave them the law.

What religious traditions do you keep that bring you closer to God?

“Perhaps they are not there,” John suggested gently. “Perhaps God did not listen to us.”
